Mathi meen is a very popular and favourite fish in Kerala. It is widely considered the staple fish of Kerala. They are small, oily, nutritious and sometimes pocket friendly. Also available in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In Kerala, sardines are called Mathi and also Chaala. It is called Kavalu in Andhra and Pedvo in coastal Karnataka.
People eat the mathi fish fresh and canned mathi is not very popular. People like the taste of this fish mainly due to the good amount of fish oil. Mathi fish was once considered the cheapest fish in Kerala. Mathi is often hailed as the poor mans’s fish.
