History of YouTube

The invention and dissemination of YouTube as a social media takes us to the year 2005. It was a time period when video-sharing platforms were very rare, and watching online videos always provided users with a terrible experience. Then came three brilliant minds, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim who worked for PayPal, with the revolutionary idea of creating a video dating website. Karim thought of the idea while he was at work at PayPal one day, when he discovered that most of the traffic on the site wasn’t driven by marketing; it came from genuine interest in what PayPal offered customers. They even had their own slogan “Tune in, Hook up” but unfortunately, this idea failed.

However, the video uploading and sharing features of the platform were outstanding, and they decided to reap success from their fallen dating website by transforming it into the first ever major video sharing platform. They coined the name ‘YouTube’ where the term ‘You’ stands for individual users and ‘Tube’ represents an older original term for television. The sole aim of the YouTube company was to help passionate video content creators from non-technical backgrounds to efficiently create and upload their videos using standard web browsers and at medium internet speeds.

On  February 14, 2005, the domain name ‘’ was officially registered and was activated by its founders Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. On April 23, 2005, one of the co-founders Jawed Karim uploaded the first YouTube video titled ‘Me at the zoo’ showcasing himself from the  San Diego Zoo in California. Currently, this video has over 120 million views and almost 5 million likes. They also opened beta services in May 2005 and the result was fascinating. Videos started trafficking around 30,000 viewers a day in just some months of time.

YouTube started its growth as an angel-funded company operating from a makeshift office in a garage. This changed on November 2005, when the venture firm Sequoia Capital determined to invest an amount of $3.5 million, and Roelof Botha (a partner of the firm and former CFO of PayPal) decided to be a part of the YouTube board of directors. The company experienced significant growth within the first few months and as a result, in April 2006, Sequoia and Artis Capital Management funded an extra $8 million to the company which further escalated its expansion on the internet. Due to this impeccable track record, Google bought YouTube in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion, and it was the second-largest acquisition made by Google at that time. The world witnessed the victorious rise of YouTube as a global media dominator after it became a part of Google. It took no time for YouTube to get reshaped into a multi-billion-dollar business, surpassing the majority of other media websites in the market.

The story of triumph still continues in 2022 with the slogan “Broadcast Yourself,” sparking success for many YouTubers. People are able to generate revenue through their personalized YouTube channels and a plethora of viewers love to spend time with their favourite video content. It has also proven to be an effective educational tool during the time when the ubiquitous coronavirus started spreading. By connecting people from diverse poles, YouTube continues its journey as one of the most recommended websites in this modern era.
