Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026 start with the FBI’s finding that Americans reported $11.366 billion in cryptocurrency-related losses in 2025 across 181,565 complaints, up 22% from $9.3 billion in 2024. Hack losses are climbing too: CertiK counts $2.68 billion stolen through September 2026, and Binance reported a $6.3 billion theft on October 29, 2026, the largest on record, with about $3 billion frozen.
Crypto Theft in America 2026 – Introduction
Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026 come from two different kinds of data. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) counts what American victims report, mostly scams that trick people into sending crypto. Blockchain security firms such as CertiK, TRM Labs and Chainalysis count hacks and exploits of exchanges, protocols and wallets worldwide. The first set measures fraud on US victims. The second measures theft from platforms that serve US users and everyone else.
This report keeps the two apart and names every source. It is current as of Saturday, October 31, 2026, two days after Binance disclosed the largest crypto theft on record. Many loss totals change as funds are frozen or returned, so the tables show gross losses first and recoveries second. Calculations are marked as report calculations.

Americans reported $11.366 billion in crypto-related losses to the FBI in 2025, more than half (54.4%) of the $20.877 billion IC3 recorded across all internet crime. Crypto investment fraud, the category that includes fake trading platforms and “pig butchering” schemes, accounted for about $7.2 billion of that. Adults aged 60 and older reported $4.4 billion.
The hack figures run on a different scale. Chainalysis counted more than $3.4 billion stolen worldwide in 2025, and CertiK counts $2.68 billion through September 2026. Then Binance reported a $6.3 billion breach on October 29, more than the entire 2025 total. Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026 now depend on whether one counts fraud against individuals, exchange breaches or both, and on how much was frozen afterward.

Data source: FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, 2025 Internet Crime Report (released April 2026), as reported by The Block, Help Net Security and the American Bankers Association.
IC3 logged 181,565 crypto-related complaints in 2025, with an average reported loss of $62,604. Investment fraud led the loss table: 61,559 crypto investment complaints produced about $7.2 billion, with complaints up 48% and losses up 25%. The FBI says organized criminal groups in Southeast Asia run many of these scams using trafficking victims as forced labor.
Recovery scams add a second layer. Criminals pose as law firms, officials or even the IC3 and contact earlier victims, producing 10,516 complaints and $1.4 billion in losses across all payment methods. IC3 counts only what victims report, so true losses are higher. The FBI’s own figure is a floor for Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026.

Data source: CNBC, ABC News, The Hacker News and Al Jazeera (Binance, October 29–31, 2026); TRM Labs; CertiK Q3 2026 report; Chainalysis, 2026 Crypto Crime Report (Bybit).
Binance said on October 29 that an incident affected about $6.3 billion in assets. Its early investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop that gave an attacker access to a service container and let the attacker submit unauthorized withdrawals. Binance says there is no evidence of a private-key leak. It paused deposits and withdrawals, froze about $3 billion on-chain with help from Tether, Circle and the Arbitrum Security Council, and says it has covered 80% of the impact. At 4.2 times the Bybit theft, it is the largest on record (report calculation).
The September 2026 incidents were smaller but still large. Bitget lost $387.5 million and Liquid Network $319 million, together 91.9% of September’s $768.5 million (report calculation). The sources reviewed for this report did not publish a breakdown of Binance customers by country, so the share of US users affected is unknown. Binance has promised a technical post-mortem.

Data source: Chainalysis (December 2025); TRM Labs H1 2026 report; CertiK quarterly and monthly data (October 2026), as reported by CoinCentral and Blockonomi. Trackers differ in scope and method.
Trackers disagree because they define a “hack” differently. TRM counted $972 million across a record 207 hacks in the first half of 2026. CertiK counted $1.32 billion in Web3 losses for the same half. For the third quarter, CertiK reports $1.26 billion across 247 incidents, a 53.9% rise from $819.4 million in the second quarter. Another tracker, Finbold, puts Q3 near $1.17 billion.
Adding Binance’s $6.3 billion to CertiK’s $2.68 billion through September gives about $8.98 billion in gross 2026 theft, about 2.6 times the $3.4 billion Chainalysis counted for all of 2025 (report calculation). That sum mixes trackers and includes only one October incident. Net of the roughly $3 billion frozen at Binance, the figure falls to about $5.98 billion. Treat it as a range, not a final count, for Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026.

Data source: Chainalysis, 2026 Crypto Crime Report (published 18 December 2025); TRM Labs attribution as reported by CNBC and Al Jazeera (30 October 2026). Attribution of the Binance incident is preliminary.
Chainalysis attributed $2.02 billion of 2025 thefts to North Korea, a 51% increase over 2024 and about 59% of all stolen value. The number of DPRK-attributed incidents fell 74%, but the impact per attack rose. The Bybit breach alone accounted for about $1.5 billion. Cumulative DPRK theft now stands at a lower-bound $6.75 billion.
For 2026, TRM Labs preliminarily links the Binance incident to North Korean actors, which would add at least $6.3 billion to that total if confirmed. The chain of events, a compromised employee laptop leading to fund movement across 10 blockchains, matches a pattern Chainalysis described: insider infiltration and social engineering behind a few very large service-level thefts. Binance has not named a perpetrator.

Data source: FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, 2025 Internet Crime Report and crypto kiosk public service announcement, as reported by The Block and BleepingComputer; ATM count as reported by gncrypto.news. Shares are report calculations.
Americans aged 60 and older reported $4.4 billion in crypto losses across 44,555 complaints, about 39.0% of the national crypto total (report calculation). Their losses rose from roughly $2.8 billion in 2024. Crypto ATM fraud grew 58% to $389 million, and seniors account for $257.4 million of it, or 66.2%. Texas, Florida and California together filed more than 3,300 ATM complaints.
Scammers use a standard script. They instruct the victim to withdraw cash, find a kiosk and deposit it for transfer to the criminal’s wallet. The transfer is irreversible. About 30,433 machines were operating in mid-2025, so scammers rarely lack a nearby kiosk. These patterns show that Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026 for older Americans are driven by social engineering at kiosks, not by technical hacks.
Crypto Recovery Rates 2026: Frozen, Returned and Insured Funds
| Recovery Measure | Amount | Share |

| CertiK September 2026: frozen or recovered | $273.2 million of $768.5 million | 35.5% |
| CertiK Q3 2026: frozen or returned | $390 million of $1.26 billion | 31.0% |
| Insurance payouts, losses since early 2025 | Not disclosed | 0.9% |
| Scam Center Strike Force: frozen or seized | $580 million+ since November 2025 | Not applicable |
Data source: FBI IC3, 2025 Internet Crime Report; CertiK Q3 2026 report; Binance statements via CNBC and ABC News; Department of Justice Scam Center Strike Force, as reported by The Block; insurance share from an October 2026 industry summary of CertiK data (not independently verified). Shares are report calculations.
The FBI’s Recovery Asset Team froze $679 million of $1.164 billion in attempted theft in 2025, a 58% success rate. That figure covers cases the team acted on, across all fraud types, and equals only 3.3% of IC3’s $20.877 billion in reported losses (report calculation). Speed drives success: banks and exchanges must receive a freeze request before funds move on.
Hack recoveries run lower. CertiK reports $390 million frozen or returned in Q3, 31.0% of $1.26 billion, which cuts net losses to about $869.6 million. Binance froze about 47.6% of its breach and says it covered 80% of the impact for customers, though that covers customers, not the stolen funds. An October 2026 industry summary says insurers had paid only 0.9% of losses since early 2025, a figure this report could not trace to a primary source. Recovery rates for Crypto Theft Statistics in US 2026 depend on how quickly a freeze occurs.
How Crypto Is Stolen in 2026: Wallet Compromises, Exploits and Insider Access
| Attack Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Personal wallet compromises, 2025 (Chainalysis) | 158,000 incidents, 80,000+ unique victims |
| Personal wallet share of stolen value, 2022 / 2024 | 7.3% / 44% |
| Personal wallet share of 2025 value, excluding Bybit | 37% |
| Wallet compromise losses, H1 2026 (CertiK) | $444.5 million |
| Exploit share of Q3 2026 losses | 84.4% |
| Exploit share of September 2026 losses | 95.5% ($733.8 million) |
| Service-level share of losses, Q1 2025 | 88% |
Data source: Chainalysis, 2026 Crypto Crime Report (December 2025); CertiK security dashboard, H1 and Q3 2026, as reported by FinanceFeeds and ChangeNOW.
Individuals face a different threat from exchanges. Chainalysis counted 158,000 personal wallet compromises in 2025 affecting at least 80,000 unique victims, and the share of stolen value from personal wallets rose from 7.3% in 2022 to 44% in 2024. In the first half of 2026, CertiK attributed $444.5 million to wallet compromises.
Platform thefts follow another pattern: a few huge breaches dominate. Exploits caused 84.4% of Q3 2026 losses and 95.5% of September’s, while service-level compromises caused 88% of losses in the first quarter of 2025. The Binance case, a compromised engineer laptop, shows that attackers still target people with access, not just code. A US reader holding crypto on an exchange faces platform risk, and one holding it in a personal wallet faces phishing and drainer risk.
